How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Row of tires

Rotating your car’s tires regularly is an important part of keeping them in good shape and helping them last longer. But how often should you rotate your tires? Why is it necessary? Our service department knows when to rotate tires and wants you to stay safe, so we’ve put together the guide below on how many miles to rotate tires to keep your car running smoothly on roads throughout Nampa.

When to Rotate Tires

So, how often should you rotate your tires? How many miles to rotate your tires depends to some extent on the drivetrain – tires on a two-wheel drive vehicle should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first, and every 5,000 to 7,500 miles for all-wheel drive vehicles. You can also check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations for your vehicle. The frequency of tire rotation depends on several factors, such as:

Factors That Impact When to Rotate Tires

  • The type of vehicle you drive
  • The type of tires you have
  • Your driving habits
  • The mechanical condition of your vehicle

Signs It’s Time to Rotate Tires

  • Uneven tread depth
  • Cupping or scalloping on the tire shoulders
  • Feathering or sawtooth wear on the tire edges
  • Pulling or drifting to one side when driving

How to Rotate Tires

Of course, it’s not just a matter of knowing how many miles to rotate tires. You also need to know how to rotate the tires as well. Here are some common patterns:

  • Front-wheel drive: Move the front tires to the rear and cross them (left front to right rear and right front to left rear). Move the rear tires to the front and keep them on the same side.
  • Rear-wheel drive: Move the rear tires to the front and cross them (left rear to right front and right rear to left front). Move the front tires to the rear and keep them on the same side.
  • All-wheel drive: Don’t attempt this yourself! You should always schedule an appointment with a professional to rotate tires on an all-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Dually pickups: Move the front tires to the opposite inner rear positions (left front to right inner rear and right front to left inner rear). Move the inner rear tires to the opposite outer rear positions (left inner rear to right outer rear and right inner rear to left outer rear). Move the outer rear tires to the opposite front positions (left outer rear to right front and right outer rear to left front).
