Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oil

Adding oil to engine

The service team at Dennis Dillon Kia is available for all auto care needs in Boise, from tire rotation to oil changes. Do you know the difference between synthetic vs. conventional oil and which one to buy for your Kia? Our service team compares synthetic vs. conventional oil here, so you’ll know which to purchase. Remember, you can order motor oil online from our parts store

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil is also called regular or standard oil. It is a petroleum-based liquid used in internal combustion engines for decades and lubricates internal engine parts. Adequate lubrication is necessary to keep your engine parts from seizing on Nampa drives. Engine oil is distilled from crude oil mined from the ground and protects your Kia engine from high temperatures.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is petroleum-based, but it provides enhanced lubrication properties and is more stable. The reason it’s more durable is that synthetic oils oxidize less than conventional oils and are better at retaining protective properties. Synthetic oil is chemically developed from petrochemicals in an intensive process and is superior (and more expensive) to regular oils. Synthetic oil also:

  • Offers enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Is less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Better at protecting turbocharger parts

Full Synthetic Oil vs. Synthetic Blend

In addition to synthetic and regular oil, there are fully synthetic and synthetic blends. As you might expect, these consist of part synthetic and part conventional oil, which helps reduce the cost of choosing full synthetic but also provides enhanced properties.

Does My Kia Need Synthetic Oil?

Some vehicles require full synthetic oil, and Kia now requires that any recent models produced after April 2022 use full synthetic oil to adhere to warranty requirements. If you want a price quote for your Kia model, reach out to our service team near Caldwell or schedule an appointment with our service center online. If you don’t drive a newer Kia model, check your owner’s manual to see what kind of your vehicle requires.
